Digital Rights Management System

The Client is a performing rights organization based in US with offices worldwide. They represent songwriters and publishers and their right to be compensated for having their music performed in public.

In order to comply with the stringent U.S. copyright law, any establishment that plays copyrighted audio & video is legally required to secure permission to use it, be it in a live performance or by mechanical means. A user can do this by securing licenses from the three performing rights organizations recognized by the U.S. Copyright Act of 1976, one of which is our Client.
The Client though in the copyright business since 1930s, is new to the digital media space which is a volatile and growing industry. They envisioned and decided to build a framework that addresses a very niche area in the digital market place. The framework is conceptualized to manage rights tracking, reporting, payment processing and auditing on behalf of online digital media distributors/agencies.

Consultants from Noesys were engaged to create high level documentation for the proposed solution. This was done to analyze and document the requirements specifications for such a framework after studying and understanding the market needs.

A detailed understanding of the client's business and studying their competitors gave a good insight into the prototype requirements for digital rights management. This helped in identifying potential customers of the envisioned prototype.

The solution framework was developed based on the FRS prepared by Noesys and was flexible enough to account for various media flavors and the constantly evolving online digital media industry. It also facilitates integration with thirdparty peripheral systems and thus frees the end customers from tedious clerical financial transactions processing to concentrate on their core businesses. Client was impressed with the level of details covered in the analysis and the Functional Requirements Specification document.
Challenge
The customer was new to the digital marketplace and hence identifying potential customers and positioning became a critical task to proceed further in the requirements gathering.
The entire exercise was carried out in a tight time bound schedule successfully.

Tasks accomplished
Detailed and extensive discussions were carried out with the core team of architects and business experts to understand prototype requirements and the rationale behind it.
First, the Functional Requirements Specification document structure was prepared.
Then, a high-level FRS document was prepared which detailed out the methodology and approach followed in the discovery phase of the solution framework.
The FRS document was created through an iterative process. The FRS document had to be comprehensive enough with all assumptions,
